Ruhee Advani is the author of Girls And Boys
Here is how she answered our questions.
1.How does an idea come for a story come to you?
I don’t know how actually. The idea just comes into my head – from somewhere. The germ of the idea comes to me first, for example, the idea of a struggling musician and then the story develops on itself. So often it feels like the story writes itself and I’m just a medium 🙂
2.At what age did you start writing?
At the age of eight. That’s when I wrote ‘Girls and Boys’. 🙂
3.Is this your first book?
Actually, before ‘Girls and Boys’ I’d written another book, a novel that I tore up and threw away. 🙁 I was eight at the time. My regret for that action ensures that I’ll never do something like that again. 🙂
4.What is the story in ‘Girls And Boys’ about?
‘Girls and Boys’ is a collection of short stories about children who learn life lessons along the way. It’s about friendship and family and childhood too. 🙂
5.Why did you name your book as ‘Girls And Boys’?
I named the book ‘Girls and Boys’ because the book is exactly about that, girls and boys – children, of both genders. 🙂
6.Which is your favourite character from this book?
Hard to say. 🙂 I like all my characters. 🙂
7.What do you think is more important- the words used or the feelings?
I think both are perhaps equally important, ideally the words should capture the feelings.
8.If a favourite character of your favourite book comes alive in front of you, what would you say?
I’d probably be speechless at first. And then maybe ask them a ton of questions. 🙂
9.Is there a particular time of the day when you write your ideas? When?
There’s no particular time as such. Just when I feel the urge within me, I write, it could be morning, afternoon, evening or night.
10.Just like you are an inspiration to others, who is/are your inspiration?
Wow that’s sweet 🙂 Thank you 🙂 I think I’m inspired by a lotttt of people cause there are soooo many people who have done such amazing things in their lives. So it would be hard to just pick one person or even a dozen. I think I’m inspired greatly by artists and scientists, people who tried to create stuff and people who tried to understand it. So musicians, painters, poets, writers, actors, film-makers, mathematicians, scientists, architects, philosophers, sportspeople, etc – they all inspire me. 🙂
11.What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
Dreaming big and believing that I can achieve those dreams, working hard to achieve them and succeeding – maybe that. 🙂
12.They say, “Nobody can judge you, as much as you yourself can.” Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Ten years from now I’d be forty. I dont know where I’d be in the world geographically but by then I hope to have published at least twenty novels, a couple of plays, volumes of poetry and a bunch of philosophy too. I also want to act in films and make films before I touch 40 so hoping I manage that too. 🙂
13.What would you do if you weren’t into writing?
Acting for sure. Theatre and movies. Maybe learning film-making cause I definitely want to make at least one film before I die. 🙂
14.How do you react to the reviews that you get about your writing from your readers?
Well since this is my first book published, I haven’t received reviews yet but to predict my reaction, I’d probably be very happy about the positive reviews and try not to let the negative reviews discourage me. 🙂
15.Which is your favourite fictional character?
Again, very hard to say. There are wayyyyy too many. I love ‘Sara’ from ‘A Little Princess’, Harry Potter of course, ‘Mia’ from ‘Princess Diaries’, ‘Bridget’ from ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’, ‘Rob’ from ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Darrell’ from ‘Malory Towers’ amongst others.
16.Who is your favourite author?
Too difficult 🙁 I don’t have one single favourite author, I like many a lot. JK Rowling, Meg Cabot, Nick Hornby, I love Chetan Bhagat, Danielle Steel for sure, Erich Segal, Enid Blyton, Madhuri Iyer, Mira Nair, the writers of Nancy Drew and the Sweet Valley series amongst others.
17.List any 3 books that you would recommend to our readers.
Harry Potter if only because it’s about magic, Princess Diaries because it’s fun, funny, heartwarming and uplifting, A Little Princess because its absolutely beautiful. 🙂
18.Is there one specific subject you would never write about? What would that be?
I don’t know if there is something I would never write about. As a writer, I want to explore everything, touch every topic possible, but in a way that is completely unoffensive and not hurtful to any sentiments.
19.Which is your favourite genre? Why?
Again, no favourite. I love many genres, all of them actually. Romance, mystery, adventure, humour and all the rest, they all appeal to a different taste-bud, but no favourites. 🙂
20.Which genre, according to you, is the most difficult to write?
Maybe a humorous novel because I think it takes great skill and art to keep your reader laughing throughout. I feel like I can maybe make my reader laugh in bits but to have the book funny throughout is according to me, most difficult.
21.Are you working on your next? What is it about?
I am working on many at the same time actually. I have a bunch of novels that are already complete sitting in my computer. 🙂 Currently working on a mystery novel, an adventure novel, a romance novel and a novel for young adults.
22.What is your message to other budding poets/writers?
Write. Don’t think you can’t. Believe in yourself and just write, if you want, if you feel like there’s anything in the world you have to, want to say. Don’t worry about whether it’s good or not or whether people will want to read it, write because it makes you happy and creating is joy and you never know what you can do till you try. 🙂
